Transforming your small Florida backyard into your personal resort retreat

A well designed outdoor living area can make your home feel twice as big, while adding value to your property.   Living in South Florida, most of us will use our outdoor area for both quite relaxation and entertaining.  There are a few things you should consider before running out to buy outdoor furniture.

Budget - Set your budget and stick to it. Let’s face it, quality outdoor furniture can be pricey.  You don’t have to complete your backyard makeover all at once.  Make a plan, by prioritizing what is most important to you.

Space planning - The size of your outdoor space, lifestyle, and needs will determine what sort of furniture to purchase.   I recommend sketching out the floor plan of your backyard space.  Get accurate measurements of everything before you purchase.   Consider grouping furniture in conversational seating areas for better entertaining. If you plan on having a dining area, think about using a table and chairs that are at bar height.  It can add a little bit of interest to your design.  If you’re planning on using a BBQ while your guests are around, make sure to locate the BBQ away from where your guest are seated.

Ambiance - Decide what the focal point of you backyard will be.  A focal point is an element that draws your eye first, and invites you in. The focal point defines the space’s ambiance and purpose.  If your focal point is a water feature or fire pit, then that space is telling you to come sit down, relax, and stay a while.  Add can lighting in the form of candles, lanterns, tiki torches, and landscape lighting.  Proper lighting alone can transform a ho hum backyard instantly.

Furniture -   When purchasing new patio furniture, select materials that have durability, and require minimal care.  Consider the following, Cast Aluminum - The light weight of this metal makes rearranging easy, it also lends durability against rain, so rust will not be an issue.   Resin Wicker – Much more durable than traditional wicker (such as cane and rattan).  Most higher-end resin wicker is UV-resistant, so it won’t crack or fade.  Teak - Lifetime durability, warm classic looks that will never go out of style.

Fabrics- One Company that makes the most durable and longest lasting outdoor fabrics is Sunbrella. Their outdoor fabrics are UV resistant to keep the colors looking bright, resistant to mildew, rot, and available in a wide array of patterns.  Consider using this outdoor fabric on all of your seat cushions, pillows, loungers, drapery, umbrellas and awnings.

Mismatched Items Welcome a Beautiful Synergy in Style

One of the most common interior design mistakes a homeowner can make on their own is matching, matching, matching.  This drives me crazy when I walk into a room and it looks like they purchased the entire room right off the showroom floor. Matching, sofas, chairs, pillows, end tables, lamps, etc.  Rather than purchasing the complete set, try mixing and matching to create a design that is interesting, and appealing.  The key to obtaining this “mismatched” look is that there has to be a common thread that links the mismatched items together.

Take a look at these dining room examples, as inspiration when designing a room with mismatched furniture.  The tips here can be applied to any room that you are redesigning.

Same style, different color. This is one of my favorite opportunities to bring pops of color into a room. The chair style is the common thread in this room.  The glossy white table base has been paired with a sorbet of colored chairs.  The selection of fabrics on the window seat help to link the room together.  The effect is exactly what this small breakfast nook needed to make it feel fun and inviting.

Same color, different style.  The most noticeable common thread here is the similar color of the fabric and wood tones.  The mismatched chairs in this room have been reupholstered in the same fabric and kept within the general style (traditional/modern) to create that common linking element.  The accessories pull the wood tones and textures across the room creating a charming effect.

Wild card. Why not give your guests the most comfortable dining room seating imaginable, a couch and a couple of wing-back chairs? In this over the top dining room, sits a large pink sofa, and two different pairs of chairs to balance this dining room table. Using pairs of chairs can be a conservative way to go if you like the idea of using mismatched chairs but feel more comfortable with a certain level of continuity.

Contrasting upholstery. To get yourself used to the idea of using mismatched chairs, try reupholstering your existing set in contrasting upholstery. This maintains the overall look of matched chairs with a little extra interest.

Vibrant Looks Define True Palm Beach Style

If you are in the process of building or renovating your home, you may be wondering which style to incorporate when it comes to your décor. One of my timeless favorites is the Palm Beach Style of décor.

Think about it, Palm Beach is an amazing place to live that’s full of rich history and Mediterranean inspired architecture. We have Worth Avenue an international shopping destination, for fashion, antiques, fine art, jewelry and so much more right here on the Island.  If you stroll down Worth Ave, you will come to see just how inspiring of a place it can be.  Lush landscaping, colorful bougainvillea lined vias (courtyards), pecky cypress wood ceilings, wrought iron lanterns, and Gothic archways, all designed by the architect Addison Mizner in the 1920’s.

Using Palm Beach design ideas in your home can bring the vibrant yet relaxing atmosphere of Florida indoors.

Here are some ideas on how Palm Beach style can be brought into your home:

  • This style often involves the use of bold colors and patterns, from black and white zebra print to more subdued floral patterns, blending the right pieces together can bring an eclectic feel to any room.

  • If vibrant color throughout the home is not your style, you can still bring a little Palm Beach design into your home. White walls can be brightened up with a gallery wall made up of prints of varying shapes and sizes.

  • Mixing patterns and fabrics is no problem when it comes to Palm Beach style; think plush drapes blended with casual yet bold wicker chairs.

  • When it comes to color, there are many blends that lend itself to Palm Beach design. Pink, white and green are a popular blend (thank you Lilly Pulitzer, who opened her first store on Worth Avenue), yet it is not the only color combination that will work. Yellows and greens, corals and blues and even black and white can lend well to a home.

  • Old furniture painted in bright colors can make a stand out addition to any room.

Sensational Trends Your Kids Will Adore

Keeping your kids involved with the décor of their room is not always easy, as many kids aren’t all that eager to give you any real idea of what they like. Still, it's nice to create a setting that they like, even if they do not really notice it. The important thing to remember is to have fun with this.  The kid’s room is a place where you can really express yourself and let your creativity fly!

Here are a few ideas on 2014 bedroom trends for kids that might grow on your child:

Add Some Hippie Chic – Retro is always in style for the nostalgic among us, but the most recent generation of kids seem to have embraced the natural elements that embodied the 1960s. Consider anything from large peace signs, colorful flower wall decals, psychedelic prints, patchwork, pastels and anything VW beetle or VW bus related.  You'll be surprised at how well this works for both boys and girls.

Try A Little Luminescence – While the offbeat colors themselves are quite intriguing, it is the effect that this décor creates in the dark that really sets it apart from the others. Don't be confined to just colors, there is also a whole range of synthetic materials that can be used in this décor theme. While the wilder, fluorescent colors of this style are usually more appealing to girls, boys tend to gravitate towards some of the darker colors like purple or grey.

Consider Industrial Motif – Popular among boys, although there is plenty of room for a budding female engineer, this design style concentrates on simple shapes, hard edges and shiny surfaces. It is indeed a very minimalist approach that works well in a contemporary-themed home. Try incorporating industrial lighting, old metal gym lockers for storage, and metal plumbing pipes for bookshelves.

Rock It Out – Always a popular choice among both boys and girls. For a very chic rock-star inspired room start with flat black or dark grey walls with bright white trim moldings and doors.  Add pops of bright color, graphic patterns in pillows and bedding.  Most importantly don’t forget to add large (chrome or brushed stainless steel) framed posters of their favorite rock stars!
